Seasonal Website Content (Christmas)

March 30th 2010

I was asked a very good question today, should Seasonal content be removed at the end of the Season, for example removing Christmas content after the holiday. The answer has to be a resounding NO!

You spend a good few days creating specific Christmas focused content, which Google indexes and as a result your website performs better in search results. Christmas then ends and you remove the content from your website. Think of it this way. If you built an extension onto your garage for your child as they've just got their first car, then they move out so your extra space in the garage is now not requird, would you now knock down the extension? I'm hoping that answer would be no. Just because people won’t require the Christmas content all year round, doesn’t mean the search engines won’t still index it. Having your content live all year round will continuously build authority and consistency within the search engines indexes, and generally increases the content of your site. You should see this as a fundamental building block for the next season. For the next season you can just add more keyword rich content to a new page, and link to it from your existing page so that Google will index it and further improve your websites performance.

Simply reordering the position of links on your website is as good a solution as any, so that Seasonal content that is out of season is not the main focus of your website.
